The DeepVersity Framework
An evolving architecture for understanding living systems

The DeepVersity Framework is an evolving conceptual architecture for understanding living human system across levels, time and causal routes. It integrates contemporary science into a coherent systems perspective for understanding how living systems organize themselves. In addition, The Framework brings physiology, learning, behaviour, experience, environment and conscious participation into the same field of inquiry without assuming that they are expressions of one underlying mechanism — or that every question requires all of them.

DeepVersity does not present the Framework as a finished theory of the human organism. It is a developing conceptual architecture for asking better questions, following causal routes and keeping uncertainty visible.

Its purpose is not to provide final answers, but to increase conceptual clarity about the biological, psychological, and experiential processes that shape long-term health and human development. Rather than seeking certainty, the framework seeks coherence: an account in which observations, mechanisms, levels and uncertainties fit together without forcing what remains unknown.

Why a Framework

The framework begins from a simple observation. Health, regulation, learning, and conscious experience may appear to belong to different scientific domains. Yet they may also represent different expressions of one deeper organizing process.

Understanding complex living systems requires more than isolated facts.

Scientific disciplines often focus on specific mechanisms, organs, molecules, or levels of organization. This specialization has produced extraordinary knowledge, yet no single discipline fully explains how regulation, learning, experience, and health emerge together.

A framework does not replace scientific knowledge. It provides a way of organizing it.

The purpose of the DeepVersity Framework is therefore not to introduce a new doctrine, but to integrate existing knowledge into a coherent systems-oriented perspective.

A Different Way of seeing

DeepVersity does not begin with disease or isolated biomarkers. Nor does it begin with optimization.

And it does not begin with a theory of what health should look like.

It begins with a question:

How do living systems organize themselves?

From this perspective, health is not primarily understood as the absence of pathology, but as the capacity of biological systems to regulate, learn, adapt, and maintain coherence across changing conditions.

This shift in perspective influences everything that follows.

Three Questions That Organise the Framework

Rather than describing the human organism as a fixed collection of dimensions or layers, the current DeepVersity Framework is organised around three recurring questions:

Levels

Where is the phenomenon being described?

A living person can be described at many levels:

  • molecules

  • cells

  • tissues

  • physiological systems

  • behaviour

  • experience

  • the person as a whole

  • relationships

  • physical and social environments

No level is automatically the most important. The relevant level depends on the question. A cellular explanation may be exactly right for one outcome and almost irrelevant to another. Changing level should add explanatory value.

Time

How did it unfold?

Living systems have histories. The present is shaped by:

  • current biological organisation

  • ongoing processes

  • surrounding conditions

  • previous learning and adaptation

  • what arrives now.

A response can alter what happens next, yet not every response persists. Some consequences disappear, some are buffered, some become learning or adaptation, some change the environment and some alter the conditions encountered the next time.

History matters through what it has made present. This makes time more than a background variable.

It is part of the explanation.

Routes

What connects one event or level to another?

Saying that two things are related is only the beginning. DeepVersity asks what connects them.

The route might involve:

  • molecular or cellular signalling

  • neural or endocrine activity

  • immune processes

  • movement or behaviour

  • learning

  • communication

  • environmental change

  • deliberate action.

This becomes especially important when explanations cross levels. If experience is proposed to influence physiology, through what route? If an environmental condition affects biology, what connects them?

If a consciously initiated action eventually changes a cellular process, where did deliberate influence enter — and where did automatic biology take over?

If one level is said to influence another, follow the route.

Every Question Has a Context

Levels, time and routes do not operate in isolation. Every question is also shaped by what is already present. The Framework therefore keeps several recurring considerations visible:

State

What is happening now?

History

What has previous experience, development or adaptation made present?

Context

What biological, social, material or environmental conditions surround the event?

Outcomes

What actually changed — experience, physiology, pathology, function, participation or environment?

Constraints

What limits, enables or redirects what can happen?

Uncertainty

What remains unknown, unmeasured or open to another explanation?

These are not boxes that must all be filled. They are reminders that an explanation can fail by leaving out something important — but also by including more than the question requires.

Different Outcomes Can Tell Different Stories

A central principle of the Framework is that outcomes at different levels do not have to move together. Symptoms can change while pathology remains. Physiology can change without a corresponding change in subjective experience. Function can improve because the environment changes. A biomarker can change without demonstrating improved health. An intervention can affect one outcome and leave another untouched.

This is why DeepVersity repeatedly asks:

What changed and what would explain that particular change?

The Framework does not treat “better,” “worse,” “regulated” or “dysregulated” as sufficient explanations.

It asks what those words refer to.

Pathology and Systems Explanation

Systems thinking should never require pathology to disappear from view.

Disease, tissue damage, infection, genetic variation and other pathological processes can have direct explanatory power. The presence of a wider systems context does not make them less real.

At the same time, pathology may not explain every outcome that matters to a person's life. Symptoms, function, experience, participation and response to treatment may each require additional information.

Pathology and systems-level explanation are not competing accounts. The question is what each explains.

Experience Belongs in the Picture

Experience is not a less scientific version of physiology.

It is evidence about a different kind of outcome. Pain reports provide evidence about experienced pain.

A biomarker provides evidence about the biological variable measured. Neither automatically substitutes for the other.

Meaning, expectation, attention and emotion can also become relevant to subsequent events through identifiable routes — including behaviour, learning, communication, action and selected physiological processes.

DeepVersity therefore neither reduces experience to biology nor separates it from biology.

It asks what explanatory work each level is doing.

Conscious Influence on Biology

DeepVersity is particularly interested in conscious participation in biological processes: how deliberately initiated actions, attention, learning, technology and other consciously accessible processes can influence what happens next in the organism.

Some of these routes involve self-directed practices, such as deliberate breathing, attentional training or repeated skill practice.

One of the central frontier questions within DeepVersity is:

How far can consciously initiated processes influence biology?

Human beings can deliberately initiate actions that become biologically consequential. Yet, it's worth to mention that influence, control and responsibility are different things.

A decision can change behaviour. Behaviour can change exposure. Practice can change learning. Voluntary breathing can alter respiratory physiology. Repeated action can eventually contribute to cellular adaptation. Yet downstream biology does not thereby become an object of direct conscious control.

The Framework therefore asks:

Where does deliberate participation enter the route?

What happens automatically afterwards?

How direct is the influence?

How reliable is it?

How long does it persist?

And where are the limits?

DeepVersity treats this neither as mind over matter nor as a question to dismiss in advance. It is a frontier to investigate.

Science, Synthesis and Exploration

Every part of the DeepVersity Framework is grounded in contemporary scientific research. Rather than relying on a single discipline, it integrates complementary research domains that examine biological regulation, adaptive organization, development, and conscious experience from different perspectives.

The Scientific Foundations section introduces these disciplines and explains how each contributes to the overall framework. The framework does not assume that health is the ultimate subject of inquiry. It treats health as one of the richest observable expressions of a more fundamental question concerning the organization of living systems.

The scientific disciplines presented here provide the conceptual foundations of the DeepVersity Framework.

The Coherence Map represents one practical application of these ideas, translating systems thinking into structured observation.

The Foundational Essays

The Foundational Essays explore individual regions of the framework in greater depth. Each essay focuses on one central question while remaining connected to the broader architecture of the framework.

Together they gradually build an increasingly coherent understanding of regulation, health, learning, experience, and biological organization.

The Exploratory Frontier

Every scientific framework eventually reaches questions that current models cannot fully answer. DeepVersity treats these boundaries not as weaknesses, but as opportunities for careful inquiry.

Exploratory Notes document ideas that are still developing.

Rather than presenting conclusions, they examine conceptual tensions, emerging hypotheses, and questions that deserve further investigation.

Exploration is approached with curiosity, methodological discipline, and respect for uncertainty.

The DeepVersity Coherence Map

Seeing the Living System, Not Just the Parts

The Framework provides a way of reasoning across levels, time, causal routes, outcomes and uncertainty.

The DeepVersity Coherence Map brings that reasoning to a particular question.

It asks:

What happened?

What changed?

What might explain it?

Which conditions may have mattered?

Where might influence be possible?

What remains unknown?

The Map does not measure how “coherent” a person is. Its aim is to help build a more coherent account of what may be happening.

The Framework develops the way of thinking. The Map provides a way to use it.

DeepVersity Foundations-Course

Inside the Mind–Body System — DeepVersity Foundations course develops the Framework's underlying ideas in depth.

It moves from living organisation, physiology, regulation and learning through experience, meaning and conscious participation, and eventually towards biological history, change and the limits of explanation.

The aim is not to teach a doctrine called “the DeepVersity Framework.” It is to develop the conceptual tools needed to think more clearly about the mind–body system itself.

Applied Work

Conceptual understanding becomes meaningful only when it informs practice.

DeepVersity's applied work brings the same reasoning to concrete questions. Rather than beginning with a predetermined systems explanation, the process asks:

What do we know?

What are we inferring?

What alternative explanations remain possible?

What information is missing?

What may actually be influenceable?

What requires medical, practical or environmental support?

And what would constitute a meaningful next step?

The purpose is not to produce complexity. It is to produce better-structured understanding from which more informed decisions can follow.

The Framework Continues to Evolve

DeepVersity is not presented as a finished theory. It is an evolving synthesis.

As scientific understanding grows, the framework itself is expected to grow.

Its purpose is not to provide final answers.

Its purpose is to provide an increasingly coherent way of understanding living systems.
